Silver Plume

Yesterday Fran and I thought we'd wander up to the nearby mountains and catch some of the aspen change. Too many other people had the same idea. Traffic on I-70 was only a couple steps below ski weekend levels. The exit ramp to Georgetown, one end of the Guanella Pass road, was full of cars almost to its start. I suggested that maybe we should visit Silver Plume, just two miles up the road. That turned out to be a good idea. There were few visitors to the town of 200 making walking around and looking at things quite pleasant.

We parked across Main Street from the town bakery. Fran got a whiff of fresh bread and pastry and went in. She came out minutes later with a loaf of cinnamon bread and a cinnamon roll. Leaving those in the car we wandered up to the town museum. There were a number of beautifully painted houses and historically interesting buildings along the way.

The museum is a converted school house. It's the most substantial building in the town. There was a small fee to enter and it was well worth it. One school room was preserved with the stove, teacher's desk, students desks, maps and the like.

Heading back to the car we were caught in a brief, cold rain. We took refuge in the Plume Saloon. They had a large selection of beers to choose from, surprising given its size. NPR was coming out of the speakers, and it seemed that everyone in the place, and in the town for that matter based on yard and window signs, is very much for a change in direction. I heard no kind words for the Current Occupant and his pals. If you visit the town, you can get a damn good burger for a reasonable price in this joint.

Pictures from our visit are in my Shutterfly site. Enjoy.
